The penalty area: why it wears out and how to restore it

The penalty area is without doubt the part of the pitch most exposed to wear, because the goalkeeper spends the whole match inside it, performing continuous, fast and highly intense movements.

This heavy, repeated loading leads to excessive compaction of the base layer and, as a result, reduced water infiltration into the soil. The puddles that typically form during training sessions or matches in wet weather are a clear sign of this problem.

What is a possible solution?
Professional clubs can also choose to replace only the penalty areas within their training centres, as these wear out much faster than the rest of the playing surface.

Last year we carried out this type of intervention at the “Mutti Training Center”, the training facility of Parma Calcio. Both penalty areas, originally natural grass, were stripped and replaced with Horizon hybrid turf rolls, delivering greater wear resistance and surface stability.

The Horizon turf-based hybrid system is in fact the ideal solution for works that require short installation times while ensuring high performance and long-term durability.

The entire project, which involved replacing 6 penalty areas, was completed in just 3 working days.
